SDS 746: A Continuous Calendar for 2024

Podcast Guest: Jon Krohn

January 5, 2024

This week, we’re thrilled to present the 2024 update to Jon’s beloved continuous calendar. This unique calendar format, a massive hit with our audience, has been a game-changer in efficiently handling his busy schedule.

As we step into 2024, Jon’s happy to update his continuous calendar which has been a vital tool in managing his busy schedule of producing 104 podcast episodes per year. This episode not only revisits the fundamental advantages of continuous calendars, such as their ability to provide a clear overview of large time blocks and a more realistic perception of the time between dates but also introduces an updated version for the new year.

He also discussed the practical aspects of using the continuous calendar, including its layout as a matrix with weeks and days, and how this format eliminates the constraints of traditional 7-day or 30-day divisions. For those eager to implement this system, Jon provides a downloadable and customizable Google Sheet version. This user-friendly template, highlighting US Federal Holidays and easily printable on standard paper, exemplifies the calendar’s simplicity and adaptability, making it an ideal tool for anyone looking to enhance their time management skills in 2024.

This is Five-Minute Friday with a Continuous Calendar for 2024.

(00:19):
Welcome back to The Super Data Science Podcast. I’m your host, Jon Krohn. Well, it’s the start of another year, which means it’s time for another continuous calendar from us here at Super Data Science! Back in Episode #482, I provided a detailed introduction to continuous calendars — a calendar format that I personally find vastly superior to the standard weekly or monthly calendars. With today’s episode, we’re updating the calendar for the new year — for 2024.
(00:46):
We release 104 episodes a year and need to manage recording and releasing all of these episodes alongside all of the other professional and personal obligations we have going on. In order to do that efficiently, we love the continuous calendar format. I know I’m not the only one who loves them because my annual blog post providing an updated continuous calendar for people to download is reliably one of my most popular blog posts.
(01:09):
Episode #482 provides a full, detailed explanation, but the general concept is that continuous calendars both enable you to overview large blocks of time at a glance, I can easily fit six months on a standard piece of paper, and you get a more realistic representation of how much time there is between two given dates because the dates don’t get separated by arbitrary 7-day or 30-day cutoffs.
(01:34):
The way they work so effectively is that continuous calendars are a big matrix with every row corresponding to a week and every column corresponding to a day of the week.
 (01:43):
So if you’d like to get started today with your own super efficient continuous calendar in 2024, simply head to jonkrohn.com/cal24. That’s jonkrohn.com/cal24. We’ve got that link for you in the show notes as well.
(02:00):
At that URL, you’ll find a Google Sheet with the full 52 weeks of the year, which will probably suit most people’s needs. If you print that on standard US 8.5” x 11” paper, it should get split exactly so that the first half of the year is on page one and the second half of the year is on page two.
(02:18):
The calendar is super simple: It’s all black except that we’ve marked US Federal Holidays with red dates. If you’re in another region, or you’d like to adapt our continuous calendar for any reason at all, simply make a copy of the sheet or download it, and then customize it to your liking.
(02:32):
All right, that’s it for today. I hope today’s episode helps you stay organized and productive throughout the year. Until next time, keep on rockin’ it out there and I’m looking forward to enjoying another round of the Super Data Science podcast with you very soon.
